4 cleansing commandments to live by

Commandment #1: Use a gentle cleanser

Always use the most gentle cleanser that you can get away with and avoid anything harsh or stripping. Preserving the skin barrier is by far the best thing you could do for the longevity of your skin.

When you’re choosing a facial cleanser, go for the most simple, gentle option you can get away with for your skin type. French pharmacy classic cleansers are known for doing this very well. Brands like La Roche Posay, Viche, and Bioderma all have very straightforward, mild but effective cleansers. This is definitely a part of your routine where you don’t have to break the bank, especially as the cleanser is only on your face for a short time and is washed off after a minute.

It often comes down tochoosingavoiding products that give that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling – which normally means they’ve stripped the skin of its natural oils and hydration.

Commandment #2: Use a separate eye makeup remover when cleansing

Always use a separate eye makeup remover – that is specifically aimed at protecting the thin eye skin and the delicate eye area (look for one with lots of ‘slip’ and make sure it’s free from alcohol and fragrance).

For a deeper cleanse, consider using reusable velvet or cotton pads, like our Reusable Velvet Bamboo Pads, which can help remove layers of skincare and makeup better than just rinsing with water alone.

Commandment #3: Avoid face wipes

Face wipes are the number one offender when it comes to cleansing. They use highly stripping ingredients to make them effective at removing makeup. Some of the most common ingredients used in face wipes are alcohol, fragrance and harsh preservatives – creating a cocktail that is very harsh and dehydrating.

Commandment #4: You don’t need to double cleanse every day

There is a time and place for double cleansing but it’s not every day. Double cleansing, especially using two different types of cleanser, like an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser, is a great option if you’ve been wearing sun cream or heavy makeup which clog your pores and might not easily come off with just one wash. Alternatively, if you’ve been sweating all day and your face feels especially grimy.

But double cleansing can be overkill and overly harsh if done every day – it all comes back to protecting the skin barrier which means keeping products as simple and gentle as possible.
