Interesting read: what makes eyes blue, green, hazel or brown?

here such a thing as blue eyes – or is it all an illusion?

Well the answer is… kind of! All of our eyes contain the same coloured cells in the back layer of the Iris (the coloured part of the eye). These cells, which are called the Pigment Epithelium Cells, are melanin rich and therefore brown. However, the difference in colour comes in the front layer of the iris – where the pigment varies from person to person. Those with brown eyes will have more pigmented front layers of the iris whereas those with blue eyes have less, or even, no pigment! Light scatters through this front layer of the iris giving the illusion of deep pools and texture – it’s also the reason why those with fairer eyes will often note that their eye colour changes depending on the time of day or even in different rooms of the house!

Can my eyes change colour over the day?

Absolutely! The iris, which is the beautiful coloured part of your eye is made up of two layers – a back layer of melanin-rich cells and a front layer which determines your eye colour (it’s rich in brown pigment for those with dark eyes and is absent of pigment for those with fairer or blue eyes). The magic happens due to light scattering through the front layer of the iris – this is what gives the appearance of blue eyes or green eyes and can, of course, change throughout the day or based on environment because of both the different light source and the reflections.
