Hypochlorous Acid for Styes: What It Does and What It Cannot

If someone has told you to spray hypochlorous acid on a stye, the short answer is that it is worth using, but not for the reason most people think. It won't drain the lump. What it does is clean up the lid margin around it, which matters more for the next stye than for the one you have now.

Here is what is actually happening on your eyelid, and where a hypochlorous spray fits into it.

A stye is a blocked gland that got infected

Your eyelid margin is crowded. Along the base of your lashes sit the glands of Zeis and Moll, which produce oil and sweat for the lash follicles. Behind the lashes, inside the firm plate of the lid, sit thirty to forty meibomian glands that release the oil layer of your tear film every time you blink.

A stye, or hordeolum, is one of those glands blocked and then colonised by bacteria that already live on your skin. Where it forms determines what you see. Blocked at the lash base and you get an external stye, the classic tender red bump pointing outward. Blocked deeper in a meibomian gland and you get an internal one, which is often larger, more painful, and sits under the lid rather than on its edge.

What hypochlorous acid actually is

It sounds industrial. It isn't. Hypochlorous acid is made by your own neutrophils, the white blood cells that arrive first at an infection. It is part of how your immune system kills bacteria, and the version sold for eyelids is a very dilute saline solution of the same molecule, typically around 0.01 percent.

That's why it doesn't sting the way tea tree or baby shampoo can. There is no detergent in it and nothing to rinse off.

What the research shows, and what it does not

Two studies are worth knowing about.

A 2017 paper in Clinical Ophthalmology measured bacterial load on the skin around the eye before and twenty minutes after applying a 0.01 percent hypochlorous solution, and found a substantial reduction. Worth noting that several authors were affiliated with the company making the solution, so read it as promising rather than definitive.

A 2023 randomised study in BMJ Open Ophthalmology compared a hypochlorous hygiene solution against hyaluronic acid wipes in patients with blepharitis and mild to moderate dry eye, and looked at both clinical outcomes and antimicrobial activity.

Both are about bacterial load and lid margin health. Neither is a study of styes specifically, and neither claims to shrink an existing one. That distinction is the whole point of this article.

What it does

  • Lowers the bacterial load sitting on the lid margin
  • Cleans without detergent, so it does not strip the oil you need
  • Can be used daily, long term, without rinsing
  • Does not sting, which matters if your lids are already sore

What it does not do

  • Unblock a gland that is already plugged
  • Drain or shrink a stye that has formed
  • Replace heat, which is what softens the blockage
  • Treat an infection that has spread into the lid tissue

Heat is what moves the blockage

Meibomian oil is solid at room temperature and only flows once the gland reaches roughly 40°C. That is the mechanism behind every warm compress instruction you have ever been given. Softening the plug lets the gland empty, which is what relieves the pressure behind a stye.

The catch is that a wet flannel cools within a couple of minutes and heat takes four to six minutes to travel through the lid to the glands. Most people who say heat didn't work for them never held a useful temperature long enough for it to arrive.

So the two things do different jobs. Heat addresses the blockage you have. Hypochlorous addresses the bacterial environment that helped cause it and will still be there next month.

How to use it on a stye

Close the eye. Spray onto a clean cotton pad rather than directly at the eye, then wipe gently along the lash line and over the lid, including the sore area. Let it dry. There is no rinsing step, and you can do it twice a day for as long as you like.

Do the heat first, then the hygiene. Warmth opens things up, and cleaning afterwards clears what has come to the surface.

Whatever you do, resist squeezing. A stye is an infection in a confined space and pressing on it can push bacteria into the surrounding lid tissue, which turns a nuisance into something that needs antibiotics.

When to stop treating it yourself

Most styes settle within one to two weeks with heat and hygiene. Book an appointment if the swelling spreads beyond the lid edge, if the whole lid becomes red and puffy, if your vision changes, if it has not improved at all after two weeks, or if the same lid keeps producing them.

A lump that stops being tender but won't go away is often no longer a stye. It has probably become a chalazion, which is a sealed pocket of trapped oil rather than an active infection, and it is managed differently.

Questions people ask

Can I use it while I have an active stye?
Yes. It will not make things worse and it keeps the surrounding lid clean. Just do not expect it to be the thing that resolves the lump.

Will it stop me getting another one?
It improves the odds rather than guaranteeing anything. Recurrent styes usually mean an underlying lid margin problem, and consistent hygiene is the part of that you control.

Is it safe if it gets in my eye?
Products formulated for eyelids are made at a concentration and pH intended for exactly that. Follow the instructions on yours, and if it's uncomfortable, stop and ask your optometrist.

Can I use it with makeup?
Yes, though use it after removing makeup rather than over the top of it. There is no point cleaning a lid margin through a layer of mascara.

How long before I notice anything?
For the stye itself, judge by the heat rather than the spray. For lid margin comfort, give it a few weeks of daily use.

The short version

Hypochlorous acid is a genuinely useful thing to have in a lid hygiene routine, and the evidence for reducing bacterial load is reasonable. It just isn't a stye treatment. Heat moves the blockage. Hygiene changes the environment that produced it. Doing one without the other is why so many people feel like nothing works.
