Blepharitis: What Is It?

Any condition that has the ending 'itis' involves inflammation. Blepharitis, is the inflammation of your eyelids.

Causes

The most common cause is poor lid hygiene or using out-of-date eye care or makeup products. This is why it's important to pay attention to expiration dates on contact lenses, contact lens solutions, mascaras, eye makeup removers and any other products you put near your eyes!

Bacteria that lives on our skin can cause Blepharitis if it isn't kept in check (through hygiene).

Underlying skin conditions can also cause Blepharitis.

Symptoms

The most obvious symptoms are red, swollen, itchy eyelids.

Patient's often also report: sore eyelids, a gritty feeling in their eyes, flakes or crusting around their eyelashes and eyelids sticking together - especially in the morning.

If left untreated, Blepharitis can also cause Dry Eyes, cysts on your eyelid (such as styes), conjunctivitis or 'Pink Eye' - this is one of the reasons we encourage good eyelid hygiene daily!

Blepharitis + Dry Eyes

The close proximity of your eyelids to your eye surface means that Blepharitis can actually cause dry eyes.

Dry eyes can also cause Blepharitis!

This is why the two are very closely linked.

Treatment

The good news is that Blepharitis is easy to treat!

An eyelid/ lash cleanser used once or twice a day - especially to clean off any eye make-up, pollution, dirt and bacteria is the recommended at-home blepharitis treatment.

What to look for in your lid/lash cleanser:

  • It should include anti-bacterial ingredients (to handle the bacteria harming your lashes)

  • It should include anti-inflammatory ingredients (to help soothe the redness, itchiness and other symptoms)

  • It should not have fragrance (a known eye irritant - it should always be avoided in eye care)

  • It should not have alcohol (a known eye irritant - again, always one to avoid (also very stripping on the eye area))

  • It should not have harmful preservatives in it (these have been shown to harm the important cells n the surface of your cornea)
